Choosing and installing a dashcam

Compare camera coverage, recording quality, storage, power, parking mode, privacy, and mounting.

A dashcam should produce footage that can be found when needed. High resolution alone does not guarantee night detail, stable storage, or safe installation.

Questions before deciding

Bring vehicle context and usage patterns. Good answers narrow the options and identify the inspection required.

  1. Front, rear, cabin coverage, angle, night performance, audio, GPS, and app.
  2. Card type, capacity, overwrite, file protection, format, and export method.
  3. Power source, parking mode, voltage cutoff, consumption, and battery condition.
  4. Position that avoids view obstruction, airbags, sensors, wipers, and privacy issues.

Useful checks

Use these checks as a starting point for handover. Final scope still depends on the vehicle, product, and agreed work.

  • Test day, night, audio, clock, and rear footage.
  • Keep wiring secure and outside airbag paths.
  • Simulate power loss and battery protection.
  • Find and export one recording without technician help.
